Emerson Process Solutions’ Hydrocarbon and Energy Industry Center provides instrumentation maintenance services to several large chemical plants in the province of Alberta, including NOVA Chemicals (NOVA) in Joffre and Dow Chemicals (Dow) in Fort Saskatchewan.

The Project Challenge
Safety is critical to our chemical plant clients. To ensure a safe and efficient operating environment, day-to-day maintenance and operational support is mandatory. At certain operational phases, such as a plant turnaround, base crew personnel must be supplemented with qualified technicians who understand the equipment and processes. During this time, operating units require measurement and instrumentation support and staffing requirements fluctuate. A request for additional personnel must be filled quickly with people who have the correct blend of skills, attitude, and experience to work well with existing staff..

  The Solution

Since the late 1970s, we’ve had successful, long-term relationships with both NOVA and Dow. Our service is based on understanding the changing needs of the plant environment. Our highly skilled control technicians and engineers provide operational support for varied and unique control systems

We are proactive in searching for ways to improve performance. Our creative commercial term solutions demonstrate that we understand the challenges that customers face on a daily basis.
We’ve developed a number of in-house engineering tools to assist in meeting our customers’ requirements. These include a skills database containing over 3,000 resources, a field service tool that allows us to assess manpower requests and determine the type of people required to perform specific tasks, and our Commissioning Document Assistant (CDA).

  The Process

When a request is received for qualified staff, whether it is to supplement a base crew or provide coverage for a turnaround or outage, we respond quickly. We provide a single point-of-contact to assist plant personnel in defining when additional resources are needed and the position or scope of work required. Once a search for personnel is initiated, we fulfill all aspects of the request and deliver the technician or engineer directly to the site.

We work closely with operating plant personnel and provide our technical staff with access to engineering expertise and ongoing technical support.

  Project Benefits
The key benefit to our clients is access to our skilled personnel on an as-need basis. We have an excellent safety record, and this is key to these operations. Our proven track record for quick turnarounds helps customers achieve increased cost benefits. By understanding a facility’s business goals and drivers, we’ve developed a successful commercial model.

Our commercial terms and focus on performance objectives allows us to anticipate fluctuating plant requirements. The depth of our organization provides additional engineering support when requested by clients or our technical staff in the field.
