MaxGas™ Expert
*Click here for a printable version of this information. (.pdf format - 2.46 MB)
MaxGas™ Expert is one of many solutions available from Emerson Process Solutions’ Hydrocarbon and Energy Industry Center for optimizing your production processes.

The Challenge
Gas wells that produce in mature areas are subject to liquid loading and other operational problems. Continuous well surveillance is a highly effective way to reduce operating costs associated with diagnosing and controlling wells.

The Solution
MaxGas™ Expert is a software application that enhances production of gas wells with liquid accumulation. Extensive field use has proven that MaxGas™ Expert increases gas production 3% to 5%, reduces operating costs through preventative maintenance, and improves manpower efficiency.

  Benefits

  MaxGas™ Expert provides:
· Closed-loop supervisory control to maximize production by optimizing deliquification operations for plunger lift wells
· Intelligent alarms for abnormal well conditions
· Decline curve analysis
· Low implementation cost and time frame
MaxGas™ Expert’s advanced capabilities are achieved using expert system technology that has captured the expertise of operators. The application uses these rules to make control decisions that mimic those made by humans.

  System Features

MaxGas™ Expert combines operating experience, empirical relationships, and either real-time fuzzy logic or reinforcement supervisory control into a production management tool that interfaces with SCADA or other real-time production systems. It can be scaled to handle a few or thousands of wells.
Intelligent Alarming
Unlike typical SCADA alarming, MaxGas™ Expert uses expert system rules to monitor multi-sensor conditions on wells and compressors such as:
· Liquid loading detection
· Tubing leak detection
· Flow below critical velocity
· Out-of-range plunger velocity
· Worn plunger detection
· Severe change in cycle time
· Incorrect valve position
· Successive plunger arrival failures
· Compressor alarms for engine speed, temperature, rod loading, and valve damage
Decline Curve Analysis
Continuous well surveillance significantly aids the petroleum engineer in identifying potential problem wells and maximizing production. To detect abnormal drops in production, MaxGas™ Expert compares current production with decline curves constructed from a production database.
Production Optimization
MaxGas™ Expert maximizes gas production using advanced controller algorithms to adjust low differential pressure and open pressure setpoints. The system automatically modifies these setpoints to create optimum flowing and shut-in cycle times for maximum production and optimum deliquification performance.
System Architecture
MaxGas™ Expert uses Gensym Corporation’s G2 expert system development environment. The application communicates with many databases, data historians, and SCADA systems using a standard software bridge. If required, custom interfaces may be developed. MaxGas™ Expert runs under most major operating systems including Windows 2000, Windows NT, Unix and VMS.

  Satisfied Customers

MaxGas™ Expert has been deployed by BP America on a number of wellsites. Installations include Oklahoma and Texas, in addition to other North American assets. The fields experienced average production increases of 3% to 5%. The demonstrated economic and operational success of MaxGas™ Expert proves that expert systems technology can make significant contributions to profitability and efficiency in field production operations.
